NSW:Man assaulted with machete in bottle shop

SYDNEY, April 30 AAP - A man has been assaulted with a machete during an armed robbery
in a bottle shop in Sydney's west.

Two men, one armed with a machete and the other with a meat cleaver, entered the shop
on Reservoir Road, Blacktown, at about 8.40pm (AEST) on Friday.

The men approached a male customer, who was being served by a female employee.

The man carrying the machete then allegedly slapped the weapon against the customer's
right arm, while the other took some cash from the register and packets of cigarettes.

The men, who were both described as being 18 to 20 years old with a small build and
olive skin, also stole a bottle of spirits as they left the shop.

They were last seen running towards a vehicle on Burke Street, Blacktown.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage in a bid to identify the men.

A father of two who secretly filmed up the skirts of hundreds of Sydney women and school
girls has escaped a jail sentence.

57-year-old SABAPATHY CHANDRAHASAN received a nine-month suspended sentence from Magistrate
JANET WAHLQUIST in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court today.

She noted his guilty plea, his mental illness and his cooperation with the police and
said the risk of reoffending is probably low.

From early 2010, CHANDRAHASAN spent about 12 months taking more than a thousand pictures
and videos in central Sydney.

Police arrested the architect in February this year at Central Railway Station.

CHANDRAHASAN was convicted after pleading guilty to filming a person's private parts
without consent in aggravated circumstances.

Tas: Thousands gather for Hobart dawn service

By Patrick Caruana

HOBART, April 25 AAP - Anzacs put the good of the nation first, sacrificing "their
tomorrow for our today", a memorial service in Tasmania has been told.

About 3000 Tasmanians stood solemnly in the wind and the cold at first light on Sunday
to mark the 95th Anniversary of Gallipoli landing.

Reverend Cyril Dann told the crowd Anzac Day was a time to think of those who had given
their lives in conflict.

"They gave the supreme sacrifice so that we may all live with freedom, peace and justice,"

he told those who braved a typical Hobart morning to gather at Hobart's Cenotaph for the
annual Anzac Day dawn service.

"They rose above notions of self for something greater than themselves.

"They gave their tomorrow for our today."

Rev Dann urged people to remember Australian troops in Afghanistan, and led a prayer
asking for their protection.

Current Australian Defence Force members and veterans stood side by side during the
simple service, which was attended by Tasmanian Governor Peter Underwood.

There was also an abundance of young people, with families huddled together to guard
against the cool winds coming from the Derwent River.

Schoolgirl Bella Donna-Jones paid tribute to her great uncle who served in the Vietnam
War, and to her great-grandmother who spent 50 years caring for veterans.

"I am the youngest of five children, my relatives died before they could tell me their
stories of war," she said.

"I wish they could've passed the stories on to me."

Ms Donna-Jones also thanked "the workers who stayed home and kept the country going"

during the First World War.

Hobart's Anzac Day Parade will begin in Macquarie Street, in the city's centre, at
11am (AEST), and make its way to the Cenotaph.

Fed: Canberra man obsessed with child porn, court told

CANBERRA, Aug 21 AAP - A former Canberra music teacher, caught in a global police operation,
did not realise anyone was being hurt by his obsession with child pornography, a court
has been told.

The man downloaded nearly 15,000 images including graphic videos of girls, as young
as five, being gagged and raped by men, and children performing sexual acts with other
children and having sex with animals.

Richard Llewelyn, 58, from Chisholm in Canberra's south, has pleaded guilty to one
charge of possessing child pornography and one charge of using a carriage service to access
the material.

Llewelyn was arrested and forced to resign from his teaching job in March after police
discovered the images on two home computers and 61 DVDs.

His arrest was part of a worldwide investigation into child pornography called Operation
Centurion.

Llewelyn developed an interest in the material after he found out his father had molested
his own children, a sentencing hearing of ACT Supreme court was told today.

He soon became obsessed with the internet and accessed the material every night for
sexual gratification.

His obsession became so extreme that he suffered deep vein thrombosis because of the
time spent on the computer in 2005.

Llewelyn claimed he did not realise anyone was being hurt by the images when he was
accessing them, a statement of facts read out by commonwealth prosecutor Jon White said.

Mr White said Llewelyn, who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and
vertigo, had sought psychiatric help for his condition.

Since then he had shown "deep remorse" and was "horrified" at the realisation the children
in the images had been victims.

"He (Llewelyn) is deeply ashamed of his offence," Mr White said.

The court was also told that Llewelyn's wife and three grown children were supporting him.

They have described him as "a very kind person who would not hurt anyone".

The hearing has been adjourned until September 26.

FED: Einfeld cool under fire

By Amy Coopes

SYDNEY, Dec 11 AAP - For a man who had just suffered a character assassination, Marcus
Einfeld appeared remarkably sanguine.

The 69-year-old former judge cut an imposing figure in the Downing Centre Local Court
today, ambling into court just before his case was to resume and assuming a seat in the
second row.

Before long it was standing room only, as media and interested onlookers packed the
Sydney courtroom for his committal hearing on traffic and perjury charges.

His co-accused Angela Liati and her lawyer were among the last to enter, standing among
the crowd who lined the walls and doorway for most of the hearing.

At the bar, Einfeld's counsel Ian Barker QC was also on his feet, to register his "disgust"

that the prosecution was working "in step" with the media.

With his face plastered across the front pages of Sydney's major daily newspapers,
Einfeld had already undoubtedly attracted a few curious looks from fellow commuters during
his train journey to court.

Accompanying the pictures were the comments of prosecutor Wayne Roser SC, who in yesterday's
opening address labelled the human rights advocate a man who "lies at will" when it serves
his interests.

Einfeld had twice used an old friend, whom he knew to be dead, as an alibi to avoid
paying traffic fines, Mr Roser told the court yesterday.

It was a "systematic course of criminality" by a man who "changes his story and gives
a different version which he perceives will assist him" when caught out lying.

Mr Barker today cried foul, accusing the crown of making a "generalised and unjustified
attack on Mr Einfeld's character".

"The document contains material which travels far beyond what was necessary for a balanced
statement of facts," Mr Barker said.

"It makes the prospect of a fair trial on any of these matters a remote possibility."

Einfeld appeared unperturbed, his eyes fixed forward and unblinking.

He seemed similarly unmoved when his close friend, Vivian Schenker, took the stand
to testify they had lunched together on the northern beaches on January 8, and had travelled
in his car.

The former SBS Dateline journalist, a friend of Einfeld's for 20 years, agreed to give
evidence against him after police confronted her with CCTV footage contradicting her original
claim that he had collected her in his mother's car.

Einfeld smiled faintly, but did not meet Ms Schenker's eye, as she agreed her memory
of events was "imperfect" and she could not picture the car he was driving that day.

Outside court he faced the waiting media alone, his head held high as he strode past
the cameras towards the railway station.

Fed: Ruddock says Hicks still committed serious offence

Fed: Ruddock says Hicks still committed serious offence

CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - David Hicks might have diminished capacity but he had still
committed a serious offence in training with terrorist organisations, Attorney-General
Philip Ruddock said today.

Mr Ruddock said Hicks would be back in Australia before the end of next month.

Responding to comments from US prosecutors who described Hicks as a wannabe who would
have been a liability for terror group al-Qaeda, Mr Ruddock said training with terrorists
was still a serious matter.

He said that wasn't an offence under Australian law at the time Hicks was undertaking
training in Afghanistan but it was now.

"We regard those, whether they have diminished capacity or otherwise, training with
terrorist organisations, in relation to how you use weapons and how you plan attacks and
related matters, as very serious offences," he told Sky News.

"He pleaded guilty with the advice that he had received from his own legal counsel.

He certainly was very much aware of the nature of the charges related to the activities
in which he was engaged."

Hicks was captured fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan in December 2001 and transferred
to the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in January 2002.

Under a plea deal last month, he was sentenced to seven years' jail. He is set to be
transferred to Australia to serve out his time in Adelaide. He's likely to be released
next year.

Comments from US prosecutors who dealt with Hicks are contained in a new book by ABC
reporter Leigh Sales. Details were published in today's Australian newspaper.

Mr Ruddock said he looked forward to reading the book.

He said the point ought to be made that Hicks had admitted training with terrorist organisations.

Mr Ruddock said he didn't know on what basis the views of the prosecutors were formed.

"Training with a terrorist organisation is a very serious matter," he said.

"Whether he had diminished capacity or otherwise to make judgements doesn't in any
way undermine the seriousness of the matters that the military commission dealt with.

"The Australian public regard them as serious issues. That is why they are offences
under our law."

Mr Ruddock said he had been attorney-general for just over three years and he had been
involved with the Hicks case for all that time, pressing the US for the case to be finalised
speedily.

"If they (the US) had said they weren't trying Hicks, we would have sought his return," he said.

"But the US situation always was that they intended that he would be put before a military
commission process, that he would be required to answer the charges.

"Our view was that those matters had to be properly tested."

base (logarithms)

base (logarithms) The number whose powers are used as logarithms. The most commonly used bases are 10, where if y =  log(x), x = 10y; and e, the base of natural logarithms, often written ln, so that if y = ln(x) x = ey. Logarithms to base 10 were originally popular: before the advent of electronic calculators they had to be looked up in numerical tables. Natural logarithms are nowadays more popular, since if y = ln(x), the rate of change of y over time equals the proportional growth rate of x, thus dy/dt = (dx/dt)/x. Most calculators now have keys for both logs to base 10 and natural logarithms (ln) to base e.

American Medical Association and VeriSign Announce RxCentric as First Online Partner to Offer Physicians Digital ID Access to New Services.

Physicians to Gain Streamlined, Secure Access to RxCentric's Services,

Such as Profiling of Drug Safety and Efficacy Benefits

CHICAGO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 16 /PRNewswire/ --

The American Medical Association (AMA) and VeriSign, Inc. (Nasdaq: VRSN), the leading provider of Internet trust services, today announced that RxCentric Inc, a leading provider of physician relationship management solutions to the pharmaceutical industry, will enable its online services to accept AMA Internet IDs so that physicians can securely access online data and services with a single digital credential. The agreement represents the first major pharmaceutical marketing application to enable a higher level of security and privacy for such services as online detailing and market research.

Physicians routinely cite security as their main concern in using the Internet to communicate and conduct transactions. With the AMA Internet ID Service, physicians can more fully realize the potential of the Internet by securely accessing a wide range of clinical and administrative Web-based applications such as claims, patient charting, pharmaceutical product information, and e-prescriptions. Since physicians conduct business in a variety of places including offices, hospitals and home offices, the service will feature roaming capabilities to give physicians the freedom to perform online tasks securely from any location.

"As new applications such as these begin to accept AMA Internet IDs, physicians can put their passwords on a shelf and benefit from secure and easy access to online services from filing claims, finding leading information on pharmaceutical products, and filling e-prescriptions," said Robert A. Musacchio, Ph.D., AMA senior vice president of publishing, business and membership.

"We look forward to working closely with the AMA and VeriSign to provide our pharmaceutical partners, and the physicians with whom we interact online, a more secure platform for new product and content information that will lead to the enhancement of patient care," said Richard Findlay, CEO and president of RxCentric. "Our relationship with the AMA and VeriSign underscores RxCentric's commitment to delivering the next generation of services."

The AMA and VeriSign announced in April a partnership to enhance the AMA Internet ID Service and help develop applications that can utilize AMA Internet IDs. AMA Internet IDs provide physicians with a single digital credential that enables secure access to a number of online applications without having to remember multiple passwords. With higher levels of authentication, AMA Internet IDs can also be used in applications that include physician- and patient-sensitive content.

RxCentric's e-detailing product enables pharmaceutical companies to profile a drug's safety and efficacy benefits for a targeted group of physicians via the Internet, thereby complementing the pharmaceutical company's offline sales campaigns. RxCentric's use of the AMA Internet ID Service will enhance this process, assuring pharmaceutical companies that the physicians who participate in the e-detailing and other online marketing programs are properly authenticated.

The enhanced AMA Internet ID Service will be the first Internet authentication offering built on VeriSign's next generation trust services, which provide a standards-based, open framework that makes it easy for developers to integrate advanced security functions into online applications. VeriSign's managed trust services are designed to rapidly assist health care organizations and application vendors in their efforts to comply with the proposed Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.

Availability

The AMA's Internet ID Service is available today and the enhanced service is scheduled for availability in the third quarter. The new secure e-mail services and digital signature handling capability will be available as part of the service in the third quarter.

ANALYSIS: Technology comes in from the cold.

Technology stocks have become great value again after the sluggish post- dotcom-bubble years, according to the manager of a new GAM fund - and this time, he says, broadband is the key.

What sort of multiple would you pay for shares in Apple? The world's most successful consumer technology company, with an extraordinary record of product roll-out, profits delivery and growth prospects. Twenty-five times? Thirty times? Fifty times?

Apple shot from under $85 in early 2009 to nearly $350 (#220) last week, so most of us would imagine we have missed the opportunity and coming in now we'd be paying a fancy price. But according to Mark Hawtin of GAM, on a "cash adjusted" basis, Apple is on a multiple of just 10.

Hawtin reckons that after years of underperformance following the bursting of the biggest stockmarket bubble of all time, technology stocks are great value. It's why GAM is launching a technology fund, with Apple as one of its core holdings, and has chosen Hawtin to manage it. Before joining GAM in 2008, Hawtin was a partner at Marshall Wace for eight years, managing one of Europe's largest technology, media and telecoms hedge funds, called Eureka.

He started running the fund at Marshall Wace in late 1999, so knows a lot about boom and bust in this sector. "The good times lasted another three months and then it became tricky," is how he puts it. "But as a long-short fund, we performed very well during the downturn."

The average technology fund lost 53% of its value between November 1999 and January 2007, the period Hawtin was at Marshall Wace. Yet his Eureka fund managed a gain of 108%.

Hawtin talks of the "technology hype cycle" in which massive exuberance is followed by a trough of disillusionment, but out of that some lasting trends emerge. "For most of those eight years [when] I ran technology, it was an underperforming sector. Now I think it is time for that trend to be seen as an investment opportunity."

The closure, merger and withering away of technology funds means that investors have relatively few choices in the sector. And among the investment banks, coverage of technology stocks stops fairly rapidly as you go down the market cap scale.

Hawtin also cautions against seeing tech stocks as a simple cyclical play. "If you look at the Nasdaq last year, the difference in performance between stocks was huge. Microsoft was down. Apple was up. Technology investing is not just about picking a basket of big names."

The new GAM fund, to be called GAM Star Technology, will focus on the internet, predicated on Hawtin's view that the roll-out of broadband is a global phenomenon that will have a huge impact on the way the world conducts business.

In this sector, it's easy to flourish amazing statistics, and Hawtin is not short of them. Ten years ago the average Chinese worker would have to work for 100 months just to earn enough to buy a personal computer. Today, he'd have to work seven months. And soon it will be just two months.

Hawtin predicts that we will see IPTV - television delivered over the internet - replacing traditional broadcast TV in countries such as China. That's why he's investing in Youku, a Hong Kong-listed stock that is mainland China's market leader in IPTV, mixing advertising and pay-per-view.

It's an interesting model in a country where piracy is ubiquitous. Yet Youku has managed to negotiate deals with Hollywood in which it legally streams blockbuster films such as Inception across its network at a price of just 40p per user. That's massively cheaper than in the West, but then China is a massively bigger market. It has 260m broadband users, more than all the internet users in America.

But Youku is one of those stocks that, like Netflix in America, is trading at incredible multiples. Indeed, it's difficult to calculate the multiple when profits are as yet almost invisible. Youku has a market capitalisation of $3 billion, but Hawtin reckons it can generate revenues of $200-300m in a few years' time, and on those prospects it has a value. Given his long experience of investing in (and shorting) net stocks, Hawtin works hard with investment bankers to try to develop valuation models in this sector.

The fund will be a mixture of well-established, almost "industrial" net stocks and tomorrow's possible Googles. For example, the initial starting portfolio of 60-80 stocks will include Cisco, a one-time favourite that is today seen by some as yesterday's company. "Yes, it is a sort of picks-and-shovels stock within this sector, but everything has a price, and there are still a lot of pipes to be put in place," says Hawtin.

He also likes Yahoo, which still holds on to a small share of the American search engine market but has crumbled elsewhere. In fact, what Hawtin likes is Yahoo's Chinese business, which he says is not reflected in its valuation. Yahoo has a 40% share in Alibaba, fast becoming one of the world's biggest business-to-business e-commerce companies. It also has a consumer-facing business called AliPay, which could become China's PayPal. Hawtin reckons you could value the entire Yahoo business just on its Alibaba holdings.

Inevitably, though, this fund, like all technology funds, is an American fund. Its benchmark is the MSCI World Information Technology index, and 75% of the companies in that index are based in America.

Are there any British prospects? Hawtin struggles to find many, although he does like ARM. Indeed, he reckons Intel is at severe risk from competition from ARM. But his concern is over valuation, not so much in absolute terms but in the prospects for a company that relies on royalty payments to outperform the broader market.

About the only other British company Hawtin holds is Yell.com, which he says is building an interesting niche as provider of websites and web hosting for small businesses. The door-stopper telephone directories may be fading fast, but the company may still have a future, he argues.

One surprise with this fund is that it will be long-only. There are some rather fizzy tech stocks around and some extraordinary valuations ($6 billion for Groupon), which will make some investors nervous. But in Hawtin you have someone who has seen it all before, and in this sector full of excitable whizzkids, a few grey hairs should come in handy.

.ME Domain Becoming Increasingly Popular for Mobile Apps.

New, Innovative Mobile App Sites Looking for Hip, Attractive Partner in .ME

PODGORICA, Montenegro -- .ME is becoming a domain extension of choice among companies introducing innovative, hip new mobile applications. Internet apps such as Kiip.Me, Blip.Me and Sonar.Me are all perfect examples.

Kiip.Me is the brainchild of 19-year-old Brian Wong, considered "one of the smartest and most innovative entrepreneurs in the world of digital media."1 Wong is an expert in youth target marketing. With Kiip.Me, he has devised a way for popular products to cash in on the mobile gaming obsessions of some 15 million mobile gamers. Gamers can earn rewards from retailers when they win a game or reach an achievement point within a game.

"Kiip-dot-ME is a brilliant, new marketing tool for retailers and a unique revenue generating opportunity for online gaming companies, and dot-ME is a great choice to tie it all together," notes Predrag Lesic, executive director of the .ME Registry. "Entrepreneurs like Brian Wong choose dot-ME for their mobile brands because it's hip, fun, easy to access and simple to recall."

Blip.Me is a cross-platform smartphone application -- a useful, free way to turn your mobile phone into a walkie-talkie. "We chose the name and domain Blip-dot-ME because it has a very personal nature to it, and the dot-ME brand is consistent with the product and brand we're building around personal mobile messaging," states David King, co-founder of Blip.Me. "The dot-ME brand is social, personal and whimsical."

"Companies like Kiip-dot-ME and Blip-dot-ME just get it," adds Lesic, "Dot-ME was introduced to the world because we knew, from day one, that the extension would work with virtually every business idea and brand messaging campaign that could be conceived. In the end, isn't selling any product or service all about what it can do for me?"

Another great example is online entrepreneur Brett Martin's new start-up, Sonar.Me. This app helps users find out if people they are connected to on social networks like Facebook, Twitter and foursquare are close by. This innovative online app just won the Ultralight Startup pitch contest and was an attention-getter at last month's TechCrunch Disrupt in New York.

The greening of Hollywood.

By Gina Piccalo HOLLYWOOD--Celebrity excess often overshadows the Hollywood green movement, undermining the best of intentions. But, private jet rides notwithstanding, there's lots of cutting-edge environmentalism happening here behind the scenes--and an increasingly urgent, even competitive, interest in doing more.Or at least that's the idea behind the Hollywood Goes Green summit, a two-day conference that starts next week at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It comes at a pivotal time, with environmental activism fractured into "light" and "dark" green: The light side advocating eco-chic consumerism as a means of gradually effecting change and the dark seeking an immediate paradigm shift. Meanwhile, the entertainment industry is in a state of barely restrained panic as market share continues to plummet and advertising and audiences head to the Internet, leaving executives scrambling to find cost-saving and attention-grabbing opportunities. It's as good a time as any to find some common ground."Living a more sustainable life has been a hot consumer topic for some time now, and businesses have started to figure it out as well," said Lauren Zalaznick, who heads NBC Universal's Green Council. "But it's key that the entertainment industry embraces these issues, as we can use our massive content, marketing and distribution resources to help communicate in an entertaining yet digestible manner how to help effect change."Conference attendees hope it will stimulate a crucial dialogue. As Rich Lechner, a vice president of IBM, points out, Hollywood's decision-makers have the power to shift attitudes globally."To the degree they take a leadership role in becoming greener, they will influence the way the rest of the world goes," he said.Organizers expect about 300 attendees, including TV, film and music executives, eco-entrepreneurs, and environmental and tech engineers. Warner Bros. Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Co., MTV and NBC Universal are among the major industry players involved, all of them driven to find new ways to curb the entertainment industry's vast consumption of resources and make (or, more likely, save) some money in the process."This is the time we need to take action," said Zahara Stroud, president of iHollywood Forum, the company producing the event. "People are bothered by the fact that they're wasting energy and they want to find ways in their day-to-day operations as a company towards making change." Mount Allison University Selects Chantry Networks' BeaconWorks for Comprehensive, Cost Effective Campus-Wide Wireless Networking.

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Chantry's VNSWorks Enables Students and Faculty to Access Wireless Network Through Secure Virtual Subnets

Chantry Networks, the leading provider of secure integrated mobility management solutions for WLANs, has deployed a cost-effective, scalable and future-proof 802.11 a/b/g wireless network at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada. Mount Allison University selected BeaconWorks(TM), Chantry's flagship Layer 3 wireless networking product suite, for its unmatched security, availability and manageability. BeaconWorks' ability to leverage and easily integrate with an existing network infrastructure of switches from Cisco and Hewlett-Packard also saved the University time, money and resources.

"As with most smaller educational institutions, we need to make well informed, cost effective short term and long term technology investments in order to maintain a limited IT budget," said Helmut Becker, Director, Computer Services, Mount Allison University. "When we evaluated vendors providing wireless LAN solutions, we found Chantry Networks to be the best partner, delivering advanced technology, superior functionality with the best price per square foot ratio."

With a full-time enrollment of 2,250 students, Mount Allison University wanted to address the mobility needs of all students. However, the wireless network needed to be extremely secure - students can easily get viruses on their laptops and the transient nature of the university population both create significant security risks. With such a 'wide open' network, rogue access devices and unauthorized users could present both a problem and a drain on limited resources.

Chantry's BeaconWorks proved to be the solution to this challenge through its innovative, award-winning virtualization technology, VNSWorks(TM) (Virtual Network Services). Using VNSWorks, Mount Allison University has created multiple subnets to provide secure wireless Internet and network access to students and faculty across campus. Anyone who is not assigned to a subnet will not have access or authorization to the network.

Additionally, Mount Allison University required a wireless solution that could be centrally managed and allow for minimal labor expertise and expense for adding new access points. With BeaconWorks, Mount Allison has a central console for managing all BeaconMasters(TM) (routers) and BeaconPoints(TM) (access points). The management features also include the ability to upgrade these components through the central console. VNSWorks provides a Captive Portal feature, making it easier for the University to manage and administer various subnets.

"Technology investments should not be 'money pits,'" said Tom Racca, vice president of marketing, Chantry Networks. "Rather, customers should be able to understand all their hardware, software and maintenance costs at the start. Our product suite allows organizations of all sizes to realize the industry's best technology at the appropriate price point. BeaconWorks products also deliver shorter term return on investment through low maintenance costs. This truly is the best WLAN value in the marketplace."

Mount Allison University's new wireless network serves 30 subnets for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Users of the network can plug in easily Macintosh, Windows and Linux laptops, and a wide variety of handheld devices and PDAs. The network consists of two BeaconMasters, creating a redundant network, and 175 BeaconPoints.

During the evaluation phase, Mount Allison University determined Chantry's BeaconWorks offers low-latency hand-offs and excellent Quality of Service (QoS). Other customers have reported similar results; the independent testing firm The Tolly Group has recently verified BeaconWorks latency and performance. To view this report, go to: www.chantrynetworks.com/site/content/technology/ind_reports.asp.

About BeaconWorks

BeaconWorks is a router-based fit (thin) access point architecture for more scalable and easily maintained wireless LANs. The solution consists of the BeaconMaster access controller with BeaconPoint access points. Embedded in BeaconWorks is Chantry's innovative VNSWorks technology that manages multiple virtual wireless networks over one physical wireless network. This technology provides yet one more cost effective approach to meeting the needs of wireless users.

BeaconWorks is the only Layer 3 router certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance for 802.11 a/b/g compliance.

Since the launch of BeaconWorks in April 2003, Chantry's wireless solutions have been adopted by a number of leading healthcare, government, hospitality and higher education institutions. Chantry has been named both a winner and finalist for a number of industry awards, including "Best of Show" at Networld+Interop 2003, the Investor's Choice "Best Follow-On Investment Opportunity" from VentureFair, the "Forum Favorite" award from the Canadian IT Financing Forum and EDUCAUSE's ShowStopper award.

Doing your best to dodge a DDoS.

Sources: (Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute Article, Computerworld Article, EarthWeb Article, Secure Dynamic White Paper, The Encyclopedia of Computer Security Article)

Coping with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, like the one that MyDoom executed on The SCO Group Inc.'s Web site, continues to be a major challenge for companies. If a DDoS attack is large enough, there are no silver bullet tactics to protect your systems. Familiarize yourself with precautions to take in order to prevent smaller attacks, and be aware of the resources available to help cope with larger ones.

Types of DDoS Attacks

In a distributed denial of service attack, systems that have been compromised by a hacker are used to attack a single target. The aim is to make the attacked system incapable of performing its regular service functions. There are a number of different methods used to conduct a DDoS attack. Here are the main ones:

Type of What Happens Suggested Fix Attack The Ping of Formerly a long-standing No modern operating Death problem with UNIX systems. system should have Occurs when the attacker this problem. creates an IP packet that exceeds the standard maximum byte size (fat packet). When this packet arrives, it crashes systems that are using a vulnerable TCP/IP stack. The Teardrop An old attack still seen Today, most systems Attack today that works by can deal with interfering with how stacks Teardrop, and reassemble IP packet firewalls can block fragments. This attack teardrop packets. relies on poor TCP/IP implementation. SYN Flood When two Internet-aware You can set your applications start a work firewall to block all session, there is a protocol incoming packets from handshake that has to take bad external IP place. This attack works by addresses. overwhelming that handshake. Smurf Attack Internet Control Message Set your firewall to Protocol (ICMP) echoes a ignore ICMP requests particular type of ping and your router to packet that overwhelms your ignore broadcast router. Each packet's addressing. destination IP address is spoofed to be your local broadcast address. UDP (User When the victim system Block all non-service Diagram receives a UDP packet from UDP services requests Protocol) an attacker, it will for your network. Flood determine what application is waiting on the destination port. When it realizes that there is no application that is waiting on the port, it will generate an ICMP packet of destination unreachable to the forged source address. If enough UDP packets are delivered, the system will go down. Source: EarthWeb

Action Plan

Listed below are some options and resources that will help you deal with DDoS attacks.

1. Take proactive steps. Do what you can to prepare your systems for smaller, more common types of attacks. Here are some measures that you can take:

* Revisit security basics. Make sure you have a firewall set-up that aggressively keeps everything out except legal traffic. Keep your anti-virus software and security patches up to date.

* Set aside extra server processing capacity and network bandwidth. Ensure your systems will be more capable of dealing with sudden surges in Internet traffic. Keep in mind that implementing extra server processing capacity to handle an attack can be quite costly and might make more sense for larger companies only.

* Purchase a back-up domain name. Purchase this domain name prior to an attack because having it allows you to swiftly retreat and park your Web site at this back-up address while an attack plays out. Post a notice on your site that informs users of the temporary move.

* Distribute Web servers geographically. This allows for normal traffic to be redirected to other servers even if one network segment is taken down by an attack.

* Negotiate with your ISP. Require your Internet service provider (ISP) to offer some sort of guarantee against DDoS attacks--they are in a better position than you are to detect and choke off traffic directed at a specific IP address. Include DDoS protection language into your service-level agreements with data center hosting companies and ISPs.

2. Investigate service providers. The following companies offer solutions that help protect your systems from DDoS attacks.

* Network-level defenses that detect and stop floods:

* Riverhead.

* Arbor Networks.

* Mazu Networks.

* Captus Networks.

* Host-level defenses that detect and stop handler/agent installation:

* Tripwire.

* McAfee Entercept.

3. Keep yourself current on DDoS developments. Keep the following resources at hand, to help you fight the war against DDoS attacks.

* This resource from the University of Washington provides links to analyses and discussions on attack tools, defense tools, advisories, mitigation, plus much more.

* By signing up with DDoS World, you will receive incident alerts, article announcements, searched archived results, and be able to view past survey results.

* Contact security organizations, or emergency response teams at the CERT Coordination Center or SANS Institute, to report and request assistance after a system compromise.

* This list of other CERT resources will also be useful:

* "Trends in Denial of Service Attack Technology."

* "Tracking and Tracing Cyber-Attacks: Technical Challenges and Global Policy Issues."

* Papers on the topic of Survivability, which are best practices that involve making computers and networks more resilient in the face of an attack.

Bottom Line

Stay on top of the latest news and developments in an effort to minimize your exposure to DDoS attacks. Although there isn't much that can save you from large DDoS attacks, there is plenty of information out there that will assist you in protecting your organization from smaller attacks.

LAUNCH OF THE ARC CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR ULTRAHIGH BANDWIDTH DEVICES FOR OPTICAL SYSTEMS (CUDOS).

CANBERRA, Australia -- The following information was released by the office of the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research of Australia:

University of Sydney

Sydney, NSW

[Check against delivery]

It is a pleasure to be here today to mark the start of a new era for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS).

Last year, I announced a $24 million grant to make this project possible.

It is just one of the 4,900 research projects we will support in 2011 through the Australian Research Council's National Competitive Grants Program.

In the current financial year alone, we will invest more than $700 million through that scheme.

We are proud to support the pursuit of excellence in our universities and research institutions.

But this is not a free pass. It carries with it the great hopes and expectations of the Australian people.

We ask our researchers to combat disease. We ask them to help us save the planet. We ask them to create the high-tech, high-wage jobs of tomorrow.

We ask them to help us build a richer, a fairer and a greener Australia.

So when Ministers come to look at these research projects, we ask a simple question. What do the Australian people get for the money they put in?

Through CUDOS, they have already paid for a revolution in telecommunications.

They have received photonic chip devices that could boost internet speeds one thousand times over.

They have supported technology that will underpin future upgrades to the National Broadband Network, ensuring we can meet the sixty per cent annual growth in global bandwidth demand.

They have invested to minimise the energy demands of our broadband infrastructure.

And they have aided the development of the tools we need to compete in a low-carbon, high-tech century.

With the support of this new grant, CUDOS will take that game-changing research to new levels.

They will attract new talent from amongst the world's best and brightest. They will invest in young Australians aspiring to match that high standard.

And through their work, our businesses and researchers will have the tools to do things that lie today in the realm of science fiction.

We will build more powerful weapons to defend us from cyber attack.

We will uncover chemical traces of terrorism, biological infiltration and disease that we cannot see today.

We will boost the performance capabilities of our computers beyond the dreams of the electronic age.

We have every reason to believe that incredible promise will be realised.

Photonics is a field of genuine strength for this nation, as the inaugural Excellence in Research Report has confirmed.

An amazing ninety-one per cent of our research in photonics-related fields meets or exceeds the global standard.

CUDOS unites the research strengths in seven Australian universities - and it also taps the strengths of leading international institutions, including Oxford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

It works directly with small start-ups and major transnationals to get its ideas off the drawing board and into the market.

The motto CUDOS has adopted for their work is 'faster, smaller, greener'.

It is an apt description of the power of the technology.

But as a Minister in a Labor Government, I will always see it in different terms.

It is part of our mission to build a richer, fairer and greener Australia.

And that is why I am proud to stand by our investment in this world-class research asset.

It is an investment in the future of all Australians.
